Racist, Antisemitic Speaker, Malik Ali, Returns to UCI

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Racist, Antisemitic Speaker, Malik Ali, Returns to UCI
Part of week-long program Islamic Awareness Week

Irvine, CA – November 9th, 2007 – The man who said Israel must be destroyed, that Israel and the CIA blew up the Twin Towers, and that Jews control the US government, Adbel Malik Ali, of Oakland, returns to UCI on Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 at the invitation of the Muslim Student Union.

Mailk comes to the UCI as part of Islamic Awareness Week which features other controversial Islamic speakers. Ali will be speaking from 12:00-1:00pm @ Flagpoles on the UCI campus.

The Keynote speaker, radical Brooklyn-born convert to Islam, Shaykh Khalid Yasin of Sherwood UK, will speak on Thursday evening November 15. Yasin infamously told Australia’s 60 minutes “[T]he Sharia is very clear about it, the punishment for homosexuality, bestiality or anything like that is death. We don’t make any excuses about that, it’s not our law – it’s the Koran.” He is also quoted as denying the existence of Al-Queda, “There has been no evidence that has surfaced, no bona fide irrevocable, irrefutable evidence that had been surfaced that showed that there is a group called al-Qa’ida that did the September 11 bombings.”

The opening speaker is Yvonne Ridley, a British journalist best known for her capture by the Taliban and subsequent conversion to Islam. She described Israel as “that disgusting little watchdog of America that is festering in the Middle East” and further that her party, the Respect Party, “is a Zionist-free party. . . if there was any Zionism in the Respect Party they would be hunted down and kicked out. We have no time for Zionists”, while both the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties are “riddled with Zionists.”

University of California, Irvine, has been in the spotlight over the last year, and under investigation for several years, for incidents of Antisemitism, and maintainging a hostile climate for Jewish students. UPDATE: The US Commission on Civil Rights (“USCCR”) began its  investigation of anti-Semitism on college campuses on the whole (which included UCI) back in November 2005,
finishing in April 2006 when it issued findings and recommendations.

Since then, they launched an educational campaign (http://www.eusccr.com ) and have requested students keep them updated as events happen for statistical purposes, but their investigation is closed.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (“OCR”) has an open, still on-going investigation since Fall 2004 that’s specifically investigating the conduct of the UCI administration..  In addition a local Task Force on Anti-Semitism has been meeting for one year. Chancellor Drake in an attempt to diffuse the anger of the Jewish community, spoke at a community forum last Spring, but created more controversy than he solved.

Drake refuses to condemn Abdel Malik Ali and speakers like him that are brought to campus many times each year, saying he is too busy to analyze the statements of each speaker on campus. While saying he against racism, Drake has let the MSU run a multi-year campaign against Israel and Jews contributing to the hostile climate on campus.

Emphasizing his disdain for the Jewish community in Irvine, Malik ended his speech in May calling Jews and Israelis “The new Nazis!”

While the University has made some concessions to the heavy criticism it has been receiving, for example allowing recording at all events, and making a minor in Jewish studies, there has been nothing done to cut-off the Antisemitism at UCI.

The return of the most vicious anti-Jewish, racist speaker to UCI, illustrates that it is business as usual at UCI.
